The Institute of Integrative Biosciences Launch Ceremony and a Panel discussion on the future of life sciences in KPK was held at CECOS University, with leading scientists and innovators. Professor Dr M Qasim Jan, Advisor, COMSTECH and Professor Emeritus, University of Peshawar was the Chief Guest of the launch event. Engr. Muhammad Tanveer Javed, President CECOS University was also present at the occasion.

The Institute of Integrative Biosciences (IIB) is a one of its kind cross-disciplinary institute for research and teaching in the life sciences and is a constituent Institution of CECOS University of IT and Emerging Sciences. The Institute starts off by rolling out admissions in BS and MS programmes in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

The event started off with a welcome address by the Vice Chancellor CECOS University, Prof Dr. Riaz A. Khattak. The newly appointed director of the Institute and Assistant Professor of Cell and Systems Biology, Dr. Faisal F. Khan opened up the panel with a talk on current trends in life sciences education and research and how they drive the values of IIB at CECOS. He added, “We need to do more cross-disciplinary science and bring in a strong translational component in both our curricula and our research”.

Dr. Faisal Khan moderated the panel discussion which included Professor Dr. Yaseen Iqbal, an eminent physicist and Chairman of the Department of Physics (University of Peshawar), Professor Dr. Mukhtar Ullah (Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at FAST, Islamabad), Dr. Zahid Khan (Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, University of Peshawar) and Engr. Abdul Baseer Qazi (Assistant Professor of Innovation at MAJU Islamabad).

The panel discussion touched upon the deficiencies of the incumbent life sciences education system and proposed a more inclusive way of doing scientific research and teaching with fewer boundaries between different departments. There was a general consensus on the need for more applied research projects, more entrepreneurial training of students and more cross-disciplinary collaboration both within universities and with others.

The discussion sparked an interesting series of questions when it was opened up to the audience, which included different stakeholders form the government, other universities, faculty members, student members. There was also some representation form leading schools and startups in the Peshawar.

Other prominent guests including, Professor Lutfullah Kakakhel (ex-VC, Kohat University), Dr. Muhammad Ali (Deputy Director, IMSciences), Professor Subhan Qureshi (Dean, Agriculture University Peshawar), Mr. Nasir Ali Shah (Director, HEC Regional Office Peshawar), Professor Ghosia Lutfullah (Director, Centre of Biotechnology and Microbiology, Peshawar), Professor Jehan Bakht (Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Peshawar) and Professor Muhammad Abid (Director, Interdisciplinary research centre, COMSATS).
